is it really the case that only orthopaedic shoes work?
A dear friend of mine has just had an amputation of her big toe and the one next to it, including the part of the foot that goes with it. she is quite worried about what kind of prostheses she will get afterwards and especially what kind of shoes she will have to wear. is there any way, at least over time, to get away from orthopaedic shoes and wear normal shoes or shoes with slight heels?

Hello, first of all, I think it's great that you're bringing up your friend's concerns here. and that you are informing yourself for her.
As an amputee, I have to tell you from my personal experience that these superficial questions will quickly fade into the background, at least once she realises what a prosthesis entails...
first of all the socket has to fit, i.e. the prosthesis has to be adapted to the foot... and if there are no inflammations and other things that are normal after an amputation like pressure points etc.... only then if at all will the question you posed here come to the fore again.
Firstly, it is important that the wound heals well after the operation. then that you find a good prosthesis technician and learn to walk with it and after that I can tell you that there are many possibilities to make a prosthesis so that she can also wear shoes with heels... it's one thing to be able to wear them, but it's another thing to want to wear them, because it is already challenging for a healthy woman to wear such high heels...let alone one that who doesn't even have her own foot but a prosthesis...
I prefer to walk in trainers and I have never thought about heels.
- I'm happy if there are no new pressure points and the stump doesn't open up and I don't have to go into surgery again.
