Community Supports means support provided to assist individuals to develop skills and social connections. The supports may include teaching and/or assistance in daily living, support to participate in community activities, and building and sustaining healthy personal, family and community relationships.
It also goes further to include the initiation and provision of programs and activities to remove disability barriers and means to overcome the barriers to enable full participation of persons with disabilities in the community.
According to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), community support for people with disabilities refers to the collective efforts made by society to ensure the full inclusion, participation, and equal opportunities for individuals with disabilities. Under the CRPD, community support for people with disabilities involves various measures aimed at removing barriers and promoting their social integration.
The CRPD envisions a society where persons with disabilities can live independently, enjoy their rights, and actively contribute to their communities. Community support, as outlined by the CRPD, plays a vital role in achieving this vision by fostering inclusion, equality, and empowerment for individuals with disabilities.
Having community organizations such as EnableMe helps in interaction. At least one feels that they're not alone and they're able to interact with other people experiencing the same condition and hence able to share notes on how to survive or improve on certain areas. This helps in pushing for disability agendas.
