Empathy vs Sympathy

Empathy and sympathy both play essential roles in how individuals relate to those with disabilities, but they differ significantly in their impact.

Sympathy often involves feeling sorry for someone with a disability, which can inadvertently create a sense of pity and reinforce a power imbalance. On the other hand, empathy involves understanding and sharing the feelings and perspectives of individuals with disabilities. It promotes a deeper connection, encourages inclusivity, and empowers those with disabilities by recognizing their experiences as valid and valuable.

In essence, while sympathy may stem from good intentions, empathy is a more constructive and compassionate approach to fostering understanding and support for people with disabilities.

Are you empathetic or sympathetic?

At least with these one can note and go and make a difference😁. Talk of hitting two birds with one stone😅
