Climate change and the Impact it has on pwds

In climate emergency pwds are more vulnerable to rescue responses due to the impairments we may have ranging from visual, hearing and physical impairments to learning disabilities.

Mainly in areas prone to cyclones or hard-hit flooding areas because of limited mobility resources, it also affects the ability to evacuate pwds to safety. County authorities need to communicate with climate centres such as the Red cross society to respond to humanitarian emergencies

Climate change in Kenya and across East Africa has led to more frequent droughts thus affecting the pwd community according to disaster philanthropy In February 2023 regional analysis, REACH said in northwest Kenya and hard-to-reach districts in Somalia, the data “indicates the impact of the current drought on food security and livelihoods, as well as access to water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) is widespread.”

We can only imagine the impact it has on pwds that are vulnerable to contracting infectious diseases because of underlying conditions, which often don't allow us to move and to independently access water, food and sanitation.

With extreme weather events and disasters set to increase in a warming climate, more needs to be done to plan for and protect the most vulnerable in our societies. More effort is needed to penetrate our marginalized community.
