Political Fever: Where are Persons with Disabilities?

Different regions are organizing to have bargaining stance when political decisions are made. The organizing and coalition building revolves around leaders, communal interests, economic interests, and other interests that are affected by political decisions in Kenya.

Persons with disabilities participation in this process is pertinent. Article 29 of the CRPD: Participation in political and public life needs to be realized. Persons with disabilities can organize to engage the political processes to realize the challenges they face, which are affected by political decisions.

The tokenism, (charity) model of participation, where persons with disabilities are informed that "we will do this and this for you" is time wrapped. Persons with disabilities should develop own manifestos and memoranda to engage in the political processes from national, regional, County and local levels.

The key questions that arise therefore include;

What are the bargaining stance for persons with disabilities?

What are some of the key issues and interests we wish are addressed?

How best can person with disabilities organize?

    For PWDs to participate in politics, their presence must be seen to be active rather than passive. To begin with, nobody really understands how PWDs ate nominated to the various political seats available for them. Nomination seems to be more or less of party patronage rather than merit. So PWDs are more or less joy riders in their own affairs. Developing a manifesto for PWD is a herculean task. To solve this, I think we should borrow a leaf from the corporate sector where companies sort of scrapped CSR for ESG. Environmental Social and Governance Initiatives. Governance must be seen to be speaking to social and environmental challenges..For example, political parties should be having a competitive disability league where people with disabilities can articulate their own ideas to their problems and the person with the best idea is chosen by the party to go and push those ideas In the National Assembly for implementation in the Constituencies or in the Senate for implementation in the Counties. Of course, the advantage of this method is that it takes away the pressure of the representative to be seen to perform and when the expectations are not met they are seen as failures. When the representative has given the ideas to Senate or the National Assembly the problems will be touching on either social or environmental challenges where social also includes economic challenges. And just like that, you have a simple but wholesome solution to a complex problem. My thoughts.
